We all know the importance of drinking enough water, but do you know why it is so vital for the health of our spines? Water plays a massive role in spine health, and dehydration is a leading, although little known, cause of back pain.
So how can a lack of water cause back pain? Our team at our Family Chiropractic clinic in Hounslow explains…
Parts of the shock absorbent disks in the spine are made up of primarily water. As gravity works on our spines throughout the day, this water is slowly squeezed out. These disks are meant to re-hydrate themselves during the night in preparation for the next day. But if there is an inadequate supply of water in the body, they are unable to do this and the disks become compromised.
So when you go to bed tonight, think about the work your spine is constantly doing in an effort to optimally function. Something as simple and easy as increasing your water intake can make a big difference to the health of your spine – for now and for the future.
