The focus is on back pain in older adults for this year’s BackCare Awareness campaign running from 8th – 12th October. This year’s focus has been chosen as a result of research that highlights the lack of awareness that this age group ha about the cause and effect of back pain and its management.
Back pain is one of the major disabling health conditions among older adults aged 60 years and older. Many causes of lower back pain are age-related with physical and psychosocial changes.
As existing evidence suggests that prevalence rates of severe and chronic low back pain increase with older age it’s really important to take proacvtive steps to keep your back healthy as you age.

Maintain A Good Posture: A good posture is key to a healthy back. If you have poor posture then all is not lost – you can train yourself to straighten up with a simple 3 minute programme developed by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). The exercises are designed to be done on a daily basis.
Be sure to seek advice before starting any new form of exercise from your chiropractor or other medical professional.

Take regular exercise: Keeping active is very important. Gentle exercise is good – walking, swimming, yoga, pilates are all great forms of exercise.
Eat healthy foods and stay hydrated: Include plenty of fruit and vegetables in your daily diet along with plenty of water. Avoid foods that can cause inflammation in your body.
