Primary headaches are a common health issue that people experience in their lifetime. Frequent or severe headaches can affect a person’s quality of life. Primary headaches may be due to: over activity of specific areas of the brain, blood vessels, muscles, nerves or brain chemicals. Headaches can cause various types of pain. Stress can be a contributor to all types of headaches.
The most common types of headaches are:
1.Tension Headaches – (first most common) is generally a diffuse mild to moderate pain in your head that feels like a tight band around your head. Episodes can last for a few hours to several days. Often related to working long hours on the computer creating poor posture if your workstation is not right especially nowadays if you are working from home.
2.Migraine Headache – (second most common) feels like a throbbing or pulsating pain and often occurs on one side of the head but may switch sides. A person may feel sensitive to light or sound, nausea with possibly vomiting, change in vision-aura or light-headedness. Episodes may last for two-three days or more.
- Cluster Headaches – (first most common) can occur for four- twelve continuous weeks then go into remission that can last for months or years. They do tend to occur around the same time each day when having an episode. Signs and symptoms may include- severe pain, pain around one eye, tearing or redness in the eye, droopy eyelid, a blocked or runny nose, asymmetrical pupils or facial swelling.
- Medication Overuse Headache or Rebound Headache- occurs when a person uses too much medication to treat headaches which may contain codeine or morphine. The person can experience a headache but can get neck pain, restlessness, nasal congestion or get poor quality of sleep. However, symptoms can vary and the pain may change from day to day. Again, prolonged hours on the computer, poor workstation, excessive use of mobile phone, poor posture, not drinking two litres of water a day or some physical activities can cause headaches.
Treatments– A frequent and overlooked causes of headaches are the malfunction of spinal bones, loss of cervical spinal curve known as a cervical Hypo lordosis in the neck or “Text Neck”, poor posture of the cervical spine or the jaw causing a Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction. When the spinal bones are malpositioned or a person has a decreased cervical curve, or the jaws are misaligned the nerves and blood vessels to the head can be affected. When spinal nerves are irritated or stretched, they can produce a headache as well as a jaw being misaligned can cause headaches. By taking medication, it gives the person temporarily relief of pain however, the structural problem is still there. By fixing the structural problem chiropractically, it will reduce the cause of pain, improve spinal dysfunction, jaw misalignment and reduce headaches.
Y Strap technique is a painless technique that works well by decompressing the whole spinal cord taking pressure off the spinal nerves and therefore reducing headaches. It is placing traction on your cervical spinal (neck) and then followed by a finally pull which achieves great results. If you are not a candidate for a Y Strap treatment, then there are also other types of techniques used to reduce headaches.
Chiropractic treatment of the jaw or mandible is often done manually or by using an Activator or can be done by using both techniques. It can decrease headaches and improves jaw alignment making the jaw less painful, easier to talk, chew or open your mouth which is often associated frequently by grinding your teeth at night when asleep.
Chiropractors are experts of the structural bones and joints, nerves, muscles and its optimal function and well-being.
